Why amazonite deserves an honored spot in your jewelry box
Amazonite is a variety of feldspar prized by gemologists for its natural luster.
It comes from all over the world, with some of the best mines being located in
Colorado. Every piece of amazonite is different, featuring unique patterns of
jade green, black and grey. This pair of handcrafted amazonite earrings will
add considerable interest to your jewelry collection, and we invite you to
read our further information about amazonite jewelry.
Because amazonite has a hardness of approximately 6 on the Mohs hardness scale,
you'll want to take special care of it. It's quite strong, but can be scratched
if crowded into a jewelry box containing harder gem stones like diamonds. A simple
jewelry pouch is the solution, and Two Cat Studio would like to teach you how to
make your own very affordable, very simple jewelry pouch.
Make a Jewelry Pouch in Four Easy Steps
Step 1:
Cotton velvet, cotton felt, or cotton corduroy are good choices for
making your own jewelry pouches. For each pouch you wish to make, cut
a rectangle of fabric 6" wide by 16" long. The accompanying image
serves to show how we will be illustrating the front and back side of
the fabric. On nearly all fabrics, the front side is the darker side
and the back side is the lighter side.
|
Step 2:
With the back side of the fabric facing you, turn the top edge over
about 1/2" toward you. Crease with your fingertips. Then, do it again,
folding toward you. Run a row of stitching, either by hand or by
machine, across the folded fabric to secure it.
|
Step 3:
Keeping the back side still outward, fold the piece of fabric exactly
in half. In other words, the front of the fabric will be inside your
'sandwich'. Run a row of stitching up each side to secure. The stitching
should be set about 1/2" in from the edges of the fabric. At this point,
what you're holding in your hands should look like a little pillowcase.
|
Step 4:
Turn your 'pillowcase' inside-out. In other words, now the front side
of the fabric is facing outward. Put your piece of jewelry inside, and
tie up the bag with a narrow satin ribbon. That's all there is to it!
You can make fancier and more complicated jewelry pouches than this,
but you won't find a simpler one!
