What is Poppy Jasper?
Gem collectors and jewelry enthusiasts become very excited when the subject of
poppy jasper comes up. This semi-precious stone is a form of orbicular jasper, which
is a type of opaque quartz called chalcedony. What makes poppy jasper so special?
It is unique to a tiny area of California called Morgan Hill in the foothills of
the Santa Cruz Mountains. In point of fact, poppy jasper is commonly known as
'Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper'. There are only four known lodes of Morgan Hill Poppy
Jasper, making this a semi-rare and highly sought after gem stone for jewelers.
Poppy jasper's unique appearance features inclusions of spherical minerals that
create the amazing flared and floral pattern of reds, yellows, blacks, browns, and
poppy oranges. Its fiery hues have won loyal fans and have given the city of Morgan
Hill something to feel very proud of.
Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper Pride
In the year 2002, the city council of this California town declared poppy jasper to
be its official rock. A walk through the town will show you small pieces of this
local treasure on display in the windows of shops and restaurants. The Morgan Hill
Historical Society recently purchased a large, $6000.00 piece of poppy jasper for
the display case of the local community center.
Yet, once rock hounds spread the word about the existence of this unique form
of chalcedony, everybody wanted a bit of poppy jasper. There is a large and
beautiful slab featured at the Smithsonian Institute today. Gem collectors and
jewelry lovers eagerly purchase orbs, polished stones, and gem stone jewelry made
of Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper whenever and wherever they find it.
The working poppy jasper mines in Morgan Hill have closed from time to time,
only increasing the demand for this unusual gem stone.
Poppy Jasper Jewelry
Jewelry makers leap at the chance to work with poppy jasper beads. Morgan Hill
Poppy Jasper has a hardness of 6.5 to 7, and is easily shaped into beautiful beads
and cabochons. The poppy jasper bracelet shown here features six ovoid beads that
capture the polished luster and vibrant, contrasting hues of this gem stone.
Sterling silver provides a cool contrast to the flaming tones of scarlet and coal
black.
Jasper has been used in jewelry making for thousands of years, and comes in
a tremendous variety of kinds and colors. It has been associated with rain by both
early Europeans and Native American cultures, and folklore attributes to jasper the
ability to protect the wearer from snake and spider bites! Perhaps it's a good idea
to always keep a little token of poppy jasper about you somewhere.
The Care of Your Sterling Silver Poppy Jasper Bracelet
Poppy jasper requires no special care, but should be protected from harder gem
stones such as diamonds, which may scratch the surface of the jasper. Store your
poppy jasper bracelet in a cloth bag or padded jewelry case. Sterling silver
benefits from periodic, gentle cleaning with a soft cloth. Gem stone jewelry
collectors recommend a very mild soap or toothpaste for occasional polishing of
your sterling silver. Commercial cleaners are also available to bring the shine
back to tarnished silver.
Two Cat Studio is thrilled to present you with this opportunity to own your own
specimen of genuine Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper, beautifully set in a handmade bracelet
that we believe will become one of your favorite jewelry pieces.
